Catalina island is located just 22 miles from Orange County, the island’s sparkling blue water, gorgeous harbor, and bright colored homes make it feel like it's worlds away. A small island with just the right amount of things to do. Snorkeling, museums, spooky tours with a bonus of there being plenty of local culture too. The main city on Catalina is Avalon spanning 2 miles with no car rentals available. From Southern California, Catalina is an easy day trip with only two ways to get there.

It's a one hour boat ride on the Catalina Express from Long Beach, Newport Beach, or Dana Point. It's a pretty smooth and comforatable ride with snacks and drinks avalible for purchase. A mostly unknown tip is that you get a free ride on your birthday. So go ahead and plan a trip with some friends around your birthday.
Another way to travel to Catalina (if you're a baller) is by helicopter. It's also the fastest way. Flights take off out of Orange County airport.

Descanso Beach Club
This beach is the sh**t - go lay on the beach at Descanso Beach Club. Think of it like any beach club: lounge chairs, cabanas, drinks, and good food. If you're going in the summer definitely reserve a chair or cabana ahead of time! Probably the busiest beach on the island.
Snorkeling at Love Cove
The water here isn't as warm as Maui but in some spots it's insanely clear. The clarity of the water makes Catalina a great spot for snorkeling or if you have your license scuba diving. A walking distance from Avalon love cove is a great spot to see all the tropical looking fish. There's a booth to rent gear so you don't have to worry about bringing your own.

Bluewater Grill Avalon
If you are looking for a great restaurant with a relaxed ambiance and above par dining the Bluewater Avalon is an excellent choice. This is a laid back affair with not too dim lights and low mellow music setting a tranquil mood. And even though we didn’t have a reservation the friendly hostess seated our party quickly. Try the strawberry smash defiantly a great vacation drink.
With endless things to see and do on Catalina Island you won’t find a better steakhouse anywhere in sight, this is mainly due to the fact that Steve’s Steakhouse is the one and only steakhouse on the island. But there is also a certain pressure about being the “only one” but Steve’s consistently rises to the occasion. This really is a restaurant all about producing a superior product and aside from the usual things you’ll find at a top tier establishment, like an inviting character, clean tablecloths and tableware Steve’s gets the attention to detail right.
Mr Ning’s Chinese Garden
I believe that this is the only Chinese food place on the island. The food is better than most Chinese with a really good price point. The portions are extremely reasonable compared to other restaurants around. The service is very friendly there's open seating available with plenty of room for large size groups of people to eat. the restaurant décor is very nice they have upside down umbrellas on the celling giving it a unique feel.
