Not to long ago I featured Orange Theory in my favorites promising to write a review on the class, so here it is!
What is Orange Theory?
In the description for Orange theory it says, “Orangetheory Fitness uses the science of Heart-Rate Based Treadmill Interval Training, the efficiency of Indoor Rowing for increased power and the proven concept of Weight Training Blocks to create the fitness level and body you have always desired.” There are 3 groups in the class, weights, treadmill, and rowing. Orange Theory uses heart rate monitors so the workout is individualized with the goal of reaching max points. You can walk, jog, or run – it’s up to you! If you're just starting to run again, It's great to be able to run at your own pace.
What to Expect?
All over the room are big TV screens with everyone’s name, heart rate % (based on your height and weight), and calories burned. As you work out, your heart rate is indicated by different colors–green for weight loss zone, orange for cardio and red for max heart rate zone. “Splat” points are earned for ever minute spent in the red and orange zones. The theory behind the class is that alternating your heart rate up and down allows for you to burn calories for up to 36 hours following your original workout...which I'm still skeptical about. The main reason behind my disbelief is that the friend I do my workouts with (the fittest person I know) works harder than anyone in the class and doesn't make her "splat" points.
Start on the treadmill first. The treadmill half is the most intense portion of the class so I personally would not want to be doing it after rowing and strength. The last time I started with strength I almost fell face first on the tread. My other tip would be show up early, classes tend to fill up so you'll want to make sure you get a good spot. With their own app they make it extremely easy to sign up for classes, just be sure to not forget (which I sometimes do).
What I Think!
I love, love, love this class. I've done every class you can think of and this will be one I'm sticking with. By the end of each class I'm completely exhausted. The classes push me hard and fuel my competitive side. With this class I've lost some weight going 2x a week. Although I do wish the weight section was a bit more challenging I understand why they make it simple.
Most Orangetheory's offer your first class free, so see if there's an OT in your area. Check it out and let me know what you think.
